I would treat this section as a diary of books that I’ve completed so far, probably similar to letterboxd but in my own domain. I’m so excited to write about this because Netflix has just released a movie adaptation of this book yesterday, and when I watched the first episode it kind of brought back a distant memory of Macondo although I have never been there. It was surreal right? I couldn’t even comprehend how reading a book could produce memories that last for years or even decades, so vivid like how you remembered a magical dream on the very first time you opened your eyes. This book is written by the genius Gabriel Garcia Márquez, everybody knows it so I am not exaggerating. I started reading this book in January 2021, when they said the mortality rate of pandemic had worn off so we could ocassionally take off our mask when the guards were not around, I was in Pare when it all happened. This was one of the most ambitious book, I realised, considering my level of english comprehension back then. It took me at least six months of consecutive reading, until finally I reached the end of the pages during the dusk by the side of Malinau River. I could not close my mouth as I fathoming what I have read, seriously, it was brilliant, Gabriel has carefully scattered pieces of enigma in those long periods of solitude in Macondo, before I even realised it. I was so busy counting the numbers of Aureliano mentioned in the book, putting aside the fact that the centrality of Buendía family has perpetuated an unprecedented amount of trauma across generations. Tragedies after tragedies seems like a snake hunting for its tail, creating a vicious circle. Yet, it necessitates more than a hundred years in Macondo to escape from those cycles. These stories from Colombia depicted that no matter how a hopeless world we live in, there will always be love, kindness, and sacrifice.
